A problem that seems to occur occasionally in SharePoint Designer when editing pages with custom made data views is that when you’re trying to open the file SP Designer throw out the error “Error reading file”.
This can be truly devastating as I’ve discovered myself in the past but there are a number of workarounds that people have come up with over the years that allow you to fix this problem, one of these being:
- Open the site in SharePoint Designer
- Right click on the file that throws up the error
- Select Open With
- Select SharePoint Designer (Open as Text)
- Highlight all of the redundant blank lines and shouldn’t be there
- Delete the blank lines
Now in many cases this workaround does do the job but there may be times when SharePoint Designer still crashes when opening the file as Text.
In comes SharePoint Error Reading File Repair Tool, an application developed by http://www.robertomarcos.com and an absolute godsend.
This windows application allows you to select the file to repair and it does all the hard work for you, this quite literally saved my bacon this morning.
Please note: This is designed to repair .aspx files only.
